Hip Pain Specialist

What causes hip pain?

There are a number of factors that can increase your risk of developing hip pain. If you have a family history of arthritis, you may also develop hip pain and complications as you get older.

Other common causes of hip pain include:

  • Fractures
  • Dislocation
  • Labral tears

These hip injuries are commonly the result of falls, auto accidents, and sports participation. You can also develop hip injuries from osteoporosis, a progressive condition where you lose density in your bones, which increases your risk for brittle bones that break easily.

If you have persistent hip pain over-the-counter medications and rest do not relieve, don’t delay an evaluation with the team at Orthopaedic & Rehabilitation Centers.

How is hip pain diagnosed?

After a physical exam and a review of your personal and family medical history, your Orthopaedic & Rehabilitation Centers specialist may suggest imaging tests, like X-rays or an MRI, to identify the cause of your hip pain.

If the results of imaging tests aren’t enough to diagnose your condition, your doctor may recommend an arthroscopic procedure.

This surgical procedure involves the insertion of an arthroscope with an attached camera to view the inner structure of your joint on an external monitor.

How is hip pain treated?

If over-the-counter medications aren’t enough to relieve pain, your Orthopaedic & Rehabilitation Centers specialist may recommend injections of medications to alleviate pain and treat inflammation. Physical therapy is also beneficial for strengthening muscles that support your hip joint.

If you have frequent dislocations or a joint deformity, your Orthopaedic & Rehabilitation Centers provider may suggest surgery to repair the damage or remove the joint and replace it with an artificial device. You may need a partial or total joint replacement depending on the severity of your condition.

Surgery can be done using computer-assisted, open, or minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques. Minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery requires only small incisions to help you heal faster and suffer less trauma to your body.

You may be a good candidate for this type of surgery if you have chronic hip pain from conditions like:

  • Fractures
  • Bone spurs
  • Torn cartilage
  • Inflammatory arthritis

Following surgery, your doctor creates a post-surgical rehabilitation plan to ensure your hip heals fully to prevent complications down the road, such as disability. Read more about Robotic Hip Replacement Surgery here!
